Life with Liam, September 2011

Right now Liam is running around in his usual "uniform," which is to say he has a long sleeved shirt on, superhero underpants, a bike helmet, and nothing else. This morning he helped me make waffles and then we spread them with peanut butter. Then he asked to be excused (this is a new skill we're working on) and raced into the other room to ride his horsey.

Pretty soon I heard calls "Oh no! Monster coming!" This is something he's been saying ever since we rented a cabin for the weekend with our good friends the Goodwins, and their almost four-year-old son Elliott. The boys did lots of talking about monsters coming that weekend, and it is something Liam picked up and brought home.

This morning upstairs he was swinging his yellow puppy around saying "fight monster! I fight monster!" and I thought "oh boy. I think we need to dial it back on the super hero tv shows because I'm not wild about fighting this early in life." So I suggest to Liam that maybe the monster is coming because he's sad and he wants a friend to play with. Liam picks up on this and pretty soon he and the monster are playing together, and he's telling me the monster was crying because he wanted a friend. So Liam and the monster ride horses, and play ball together.

Liam also likes to ride his yellow puppy around his room like it is a hobby horse. He puts the puppy between his legs, holds both the ears like reins, and then gallops loudly around the room shouting "hyah! hyah!" like a good little cowboy.

There are a hundred little things that he has started to do and they all make life such an interesting place. We play "one big eye!" where we slowly put our faces together until our noses are touching and it looks like we each have only one big eye. Then he shouts "One big eye!" and dissolves into gales of giggles. This is repeated several times without tiring.

Its a good thing he mostly has a great attitude, because he's been almost continuously sick for all of September. First is was an ear infection. Two days after he finished that antibiotic he got sick again and wound up having Strep throat and Hand-Foot-Mouth. Those two together meant that for two or three days he howled and cried every time he tried to eat or drink almost anything. So for the first few days he lived only on chocolate ice cream. As he got on the mend, then he also wanted mac and cheese. So for nearly a week it was mostly mac and cheese and chocolate ice cream. You can, perhaps, see how this set us up for some food struggles after he got better and wanted to continue that special diet.

Literally 24 hours after he finished his antibiotic for the Strep throat he started up with a snotty nose and a slight cough. Sigh.

And just as I was writing this, I looked up and he was at the television stand. "Watch Mater" he says. Then he gets the key that unlocks the doors, unlocks them, pushes the button that opens the XBOX, takes out terry's DVD, and is about to put another DVD in. At that point I get over there, concerned he's about to scratch something. Sure enough, he has the Cars DVD in his hand and has it in the XBOX tray. Push the button and in it goes.
